Second suspect arrested in killing of Mexican journalist Javier Valdez

MEXICO CITY

PUBLISHED 15 HOURS AGO

Mexico’s Attorney-General’s Office says another person has been arrested for alleged involvement in last year’s killing of respected journalist Javier Valdez.

The suspect’s full name was not provided Wednesday, but federal prosecutors said he was already in custody in the western state of Baja California on unrelated charges.

The Attorney-General’s Office said in a statement that the suspect would be charged in the May 15, 2017, killing of Valdez in Culiacan, Sinaloa. There was no information provided about what role the suspect allegedly played in the killing.

In April, National Security Commissioner Renato Sales said Valdez was killed because of his work. That day he also announced the arrest of another suspect who was a member of the Sinaloa drug cartel.
