International capture order for former Ecuador president Correa for kidnapping, corruption

Justice of Ecuador issues prison order against former president Rafael Correa
Jul 03 2018, 12:08 pm

Ecuadorian justice on Tuesday ordered preventive detention against former President Rafael Correa (2007-2017), who lives in Belgium, for his alleged involvement in the kidnapping of an opponent in Colombia in 2012.

Judge Daniela Camacho "denies request for review of precautionary measures to the defense of former President Rafael Correa, resolves to impose preventive detention against him and issues red broadcast to Interpol," said the National Court of Justice (CNJ) on Twitter.

Camacho welcomed the requests of the Attorney General, Paul Perez, for the alleged involvement of Correa "in the crimes of conspiracy and kidnapping," the prosecutor said in turn on the same social network.

Correa is in the sights of justice for the case of former opposition Fernando Balda, who accuses him of ordering his kidnapping when he was in Bogotá in 2012.

Five people forced him into a car, although Colombian police intercepted the vehicle and thwarted the kidnapping.
