As a good revolutionary, Rafael Correa evades justice and will request asylum in Belgium
Elizabeth Fuentes | July 13, 2018
Caracas / Photo Cover: DW.- The former president of Ecuador, tried for kidnapping and illicit association, did not appear yesterday to a video conference that had to be held at the Consulate of Ecuador in Belgium, where he is isolated. Minutes after the scheduled time, Correa's lawyer, Fernando Molina, assured that the decision of the former president is to request asylum in Belgium since the defendant considers that in Ecuador there are no guarantees that allow him a fair trial.
When questioned about the lack of guarantees for his defendant, Molina said that Correa's decision is to request an asylum in Belgium, according to the newspaper El Comercio, of Ecuador. The request for political asylum would be complicated because it could generate diplomatic consequences between both countries since, according to El Comercio, former Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Nina Pacari, if Belgium grants asylum, it implies that the government recognizes that in Ecuador justice does not work as it is. due and added that political asylum does not correspond in this case, since an alleged kidnapping is investigated.

Popular slogan from the late great Hugo Chavez. Plagiarized by the Marxists in Latin America until recently
Correa is a funny guy. He had no problem ignoring the rule of law in Ecuador when he was running the show. Always full of bombast, he usurped Chavez with the slogan, iPatria, Socialismo o Muerte! (Fatherland, Socialism or Death!) It appears that since Socialism (at least the Bolivarian brand) is dead in Ecuador (and killing Venezuela), and death isn't something Correa wasn't that serious about, he has abandoned his homeland instead of facing a trial for his shenanigans while El Presidente.
Maybe he thinks that if he waits around long enough in Belgium, some friendly army will unseat the Ecuador government and replace them with him as a new El Galactico Comandante?

OP
Is Ecuador another state Trump wants to invade or is it no longer socialist enough for that?

Ecuador is doing quite well without Correa (Marxist Leninist) or Trump (Fascism)

Limits. Lost that and returned to Belgium. His VP, Blas, is in jail.

Evo Morales learned from Correa's mistake and decided he wouldn't wait until out of office to overturn term limits. He lost that bid too... Bolivians want term limits... but Morales is going to use his "authority" to usurp the Bolivian Constitution and run regardless. He says its his "human right" to run for Presidente indefinitely regardless of any laws or constitution.
