French Left Leader Denounces Legal War against Lula

Brasilia, Jan 11 (Prensa Latina) French left leader Jean Luc Melenchon on Friday denounced the judicial war, known as ''lawfare'', against former Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, imprisoned since April on fabricated charges of corruption.

'Lawfare is now used in all countries to get rid of progressive leaders. This is what they did with Lula,' the former French presidential candidate posted in his Twitter account, quoted by Brasil 247 news website.

The leader of La France Insoumise said that 'judge (Sergio Moro) who condemned Lula is now Minister of Jair Bolsonaro, the new president of Brazil'.

According to scholars, lawfare is the Anglo-Saxon term that is divided into law and war. It refers to a legal war: the use of the judicial system to discredit a political adversary.

Since March 4, 2016, Lula has been a direct victim of accusations to destroy his work and image, built in more than 40 years of public life, Melechon recalled.

The Supreme Court expects this year to analyze a writ of habeas corpus (suspended by late November) presented by his defense in an another effort to release the former president.
