Shocking video captured by a passenger shows the moment a Cessna 206 fell from the sky and crashed into a forest in Venezuela. The crash reportedly killed two of the planes four passengers.
In the footage posted this week, the light aircraft lists to one side before smashing into a thickly-wooded area below. The crew panics, before the video abruptly cuts.
The accident took place in the Gran Sabana area of Bolivar State. Three of the planes occupants were colonels in the Venezuelan armed forces, while one was a sergeant, ACN reported. Two of the colonels were reportedly killed in the crash.

The story circulating here in Venezuela: The plane was carrying illegal gold, flying at an extremely low altitude to avoid detection by radar. One of the occupants killed was the cousin of Vladimir Padrino Lopez who is the head honcho of Venezulea's military. In the video you can hear the occupants screaming, coño, coño, coño, which roughly translates to fuck fuck fuck I'm dead.
Okay, I added the "I'm dead", part.

(285 posts)......looking at the horizon, is there any other reason for them to be flying that low over a forested area? That's to say, does the "trying to escape radar detection" claim sound plausible?
I will say this. There is very little plane activity in Venezuela. I live in the northern quarter of the country where most of the population centers are located and might hear a single plane fly overhead once a day. Contrast that to the US, or even some fairly remote areas of Canada, where there's plane traffic all day every day.

(16,386 posts)And by flying low you have very little wiggle room if something goes wrong. Stalls are recoverable if you have enough altitude. Kind of looks like, for whatever reason, he stalled and half spun-in, hitting the right wing first. Boy, those trees came up to meet the plan quickly, didn't they? That'll be interesting to read about.

(285 posts)........I saw one early-on that I've not been able to find again of a close up of the left side of the cockpit. It and the strut were bloodied, obviously by someone leaving the plane bleeding heavily.

(285 posts)....pretty warm generally. Did it look to you like he was initially struggling to get altitude, or that he was just flying on the deck and suddenly stalled with no room to spare? Looked to me like the latter.

(285 posts)........I posted the video to a pilot's forum and asked what they thought was going on/had gone wrong, etc.
Just a few of the responses:
1) obviously overloaded for flying conditions
2) possible case of the terrain gradient exceeding the climb gradient of the aircraft
3) DA, density altitude problem, a fancy way of describing how many air molecules the wings have to work with to provide lift
4) trying to fly under radar was the last thing on that pilot's mind, almost impossible with today's spy-focused radars
5) from the beginning of the video, that aircraft was already in deep shit, barely flying with stall warnings going off
