Jair Bolsonaros administration is considering axing an independent panel for Brazils environmental policy in a move that activists warn could lead to increased deforestation, documents have revealed.
Brazils president proposed creating a government council of political appointees to replace the National Council of the Environment (known as Conama), which has almost 100 members, including representatives of independent environmental and business groups.
Conama helps protect the 60 per cent of the Amazon rainforest that is in Brazil, which scientists see as crucial for efforts to slow global warming.
. . .
As a congressman and candidate, Mr Bolsonaro often questioned the reality of climate change and cast environmental groups as foreign-influenced meddlers restraining Brazils economic growth by holding back mining and agriculture.

(160,540 posts)They are very powerful still in Brazil, despite the massive number of Brazilian citizens who voted for Luis Inacio Lula de Silva twice, and Dilma Rousseff, both of whom fought against the dictatorship, Dilma Rousseff herself having been tortured extensively in prison by the dictatorship, and later, as president, was sabotaged, and removed from office by a deeply corrupt right-wing controlled legislature, of which Bolsonaro was a leader.
During the vote to either keep or remove her in the legislature, Bolsonaro stood up and publicly devoted his vote against Dilma Rousseff to the man who tortured her in prison.
Also, while in the legislature, he loudly insisted that a female legislator he hated was too ugly for be raped.
He is pure evil.
That rape crap sounds very similar to Trump's claim one of the women he groped was too ugly for him to grope.
Bolsonaro is called the 'Trump of the Tropics."
A human being would see that as a hideous insult. Bolsonaro relishes it.
