PLASTIC BOTTLE VILLAGE
If you've traded your plastic bags for reusable totes and swapped your plastic straws for metal ones, maybe it's time to consider an even bigger step toward saving our planet: Living in a home made out of 16,000 upcycled plastic bottles. Robert Bezeau, a Canadian man currently living in Bocas del Toro, Panama, dreams of creating an entire village on the island made out of discarded plastic bottlesand he's already gotten started.
Called the Plastic Bottle Village, these homes are built by packing metal cages with plastic bottles, welding those cages together with steel rebars, and then covering everything with concreteif you didn't know, you'd never guess that thousands of plastic bottles were laying underneath the foundation.
A 100-square-foot home in Plastic Bottle Village can upcycle as many as 16,000 plastic bottleswhich is almost what the average person uses in their lifetime, according to PBV's website. And the best part? They start at just $19,000 each.
The website also claims these homes are earthquake resistant, and that parts of the house can act like flotation devices in an emergency. One of the best parts is that the bottles inside the home have an insulating effect, and the average temperature inside of a house in the Plastic Bottle Village are 35°F cooler than outside!
