Colombia to charge allegedly corrupt former Supreme Court magistrate: reports

by Adriaan Alsema August 25, 2019

Colombia’s Prosecutor General’s Offices plans to file criminal charges against a former Supreme Court president two years after DEA evidence indicated he took bribes from politicians, according to local media.

Prosecution officials told media they intended to file criminal charges against former magistrate Camilo Tarquino after the Supreme Judicial Council ordered to investigate the Prosecutor General’s Office over the surprise release of former Supreme Court president Francisco Ricaurte from jail on Wednesday.

Two years after the so-called Toga Cartel scandal broke, none of the four former Supreme Court magistrates who allegedly took money from investigated politicians are on trial.

The key witness in the case, former chief anti-corruption prosecutor Luis Gustavo Moreno, was extradited to the US late last year before he could testify against any of the politicians and former magistrates allegedly involved in the corruption ring.
