Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro will miss a United Nations summit planned for this month to address the fires currently ravaging the Amazon rainforest.
BBC reports Bolsonaro will miss the summit as he prepares for surgery to address a stab wound he suffered during his presidential election campaign last year.
A spokesperson for Bolsonaro told the news outlet that Brazil is considering sending a representative to the summit in place of the president, or requesting that the meeting be postponed.
The stabbing occurred in September 2018, just a month before Bolsonaro was elected president. The surgery is intended to correct a hernia he suffered from the stabbing and it will be the fourth operation Bolsonaro will undergo since the attack.
Bolsonaro said Monday that he would appear at the UN summit even in a wheelchair to defend his policies surrounding the Amazon, but doctors have recommended he not travel as he will need 10 days of rest following the surgery.
