Tensions rise in Colombia as top mafia lawyer set to testify in Uribe case

by Adriaan Alsema September 5, 2019

One of Colombia’s top mafia lawyers, Diego Cadena, is set to defend former President Alvaro Uribe before the Supreme Court on Friday while his own liberty is at risk.

Cadena couldn’t possibly be under more pressure; the Prosecutor General’s Office is already investigating Uribe’s fixer over his alleged witness tampering practices and three other criminal charges.

The investigation against Uribe has already resulted in evidence that can be used against the mafia lawyer and is likely to produce more evidence when witnesses against the former president testify.

Cadena: the alleged key link
According to transcripts of wiretap recordings revealed in the media, Cadena is the key link between Uribe and the witnesses who allegedly have been bribed to defend the former president.

Colombian paramilitary leader 'sexually abused more than 200 girls under the age of 14 and could have fathered more than 70 children' before he was extradited to the U.S. for cocaine trafficking

Feb 27, 2015

  • Hernan Giraldo Serna allegedly raped more than 200 girls and could be the father of more than 70 children, a report claims

  • The investigation was carried out by Interior Secretary Norma Vera Salazar in the northern Colombian department of Magdalena

  • Serna, now 70, was the leader of the notorious Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia (United Self Defense Forces of Colombia)

  • For almost two decades, the paramilitary group was involved in a deadly war with the FARC and ELN rebel groups

  • Serna reportedly showered his victims with gifts and would quickly replace them once younger girls came into the picture

  • He was extradited to the U.S. in 2008 and entered a plea agreement for cocaine trafficking. He was sentenced in 2017 to 16 years and six months in prison
