Bolsonaro's Son Says Brazil Will Not Transform Itself through Democracy

Carlos Bolsonaro, who provoked mayhem in the government's first semester, said that advances are being ignored

Sep.10.2019 11:43AM

Councilman Carlos Bolsonaro (PSC-RJ), son of President Jair Bolsonaro (PSL), tweeted on Monday (9) that Brazil will not change rapidly by "democratic means."

"Democratically, the transformation that Brazil wants will not happen at the speed we are aiming for ... and if that happens. I only see the wheel spinning around its axis every day, and those who have always dominated us continue to dominate us in different ways!" wrote Carlos.

Before writing this, Carlos said that the current government tries to put Brazil "in the axes," but that "advances are ignored, and evildoers are forgotten."

Carlos's post quickly reverberated among his followers. Some of the netizens saw the tweet as a defense of the dictatorship and called the councilman "coup." The Bolsonaro family is known for the exaltation of the period of military dictatorship, which ran in Brazil from 1964 to 1985.

Carlos Bolsonaro defends dictatorship so that “the transformation that Brazil wants” happens
The president's tweeting son made it explicit that he does not believe in change through democratic means.

Councilman Carlos Bolsonaro (PSC-RJ), in a sequence of tweets posted on Monday (9), suggested a democratic break for "the transformation that Brazil wants" to happen. In other words, he preached dictatorship.

For the Bolsonaro family tweeter, his father has been acting to undo “nonsense” from previous governments, but believes that real change will not come through democracy.

The rumbustious son of Brazil’s far-right president, Jair Bolsonaro, has come under heavy fire from across the political spectrum after claiming rapid political change was unachievable “through democratic means”.

Carlos Bolsonaro – a politician and social media fanatic known for his incendiary and often unintelligible tweets – sparked the maelstrom on Monday evening with a 43-word post on Twitter.

“The transformation Brazil wants will not happen at the speed we yearn for through democratic means,” he tweeted to his 1.3 million followers.

That comment triggered an immediate outcry in a country that only emerged from two decades of dictatorship in 1985 and whose current leader is a notorious pro-torture admirer of that military period and other authoritarian regimes.

“Yes, I’m in favour of a dictatorship,” Jair Bolsonaro once told Brazil’s congress.
