Peruvian police arrests former army chief convicted of corruption
Lima, Oct 31 (Prensa Latina) Peruvian police captured former army chief and former congressman Edwin Donayre, a fugitive since his prison sentence for the illegal appropriation of fuel inside the Army while serving as general, was ratified in April.
Interior Minister Carlos Moran said Wednesday night that a police team was dedicated to look for and found and arrested Donayre in Puente Piedra district, north of Lima, shortly after he arrived in the capital from a shelter within the country.
The former military chief, convicted of stealing and selling more than 500,000 gallons of fuel inside the Army, along with a group of uniformed army officials under his command also convicted, was arrested a few meters from a police station in Puente Piedra.
The crime was committed some few years ago, before Donayre was elected, in 2016, a parliamentarian, and convicted in August 2018.
His capture was achieved the same day that the parliamentary immunity of 14 of 31 members of the parliament dissolved one month ago, expires. They have pending investigations or judicial proceedings for many common crimes.
