Since April in Nepal, preparing to climb Mount Everest, Aretha Duarte has finally become the first Brazilian and black Latin American to climb the highest mountain in the world.
She never thought it would be impossible and she planned a lot to achieve this achievement. The attack on the summit began on 05/18. According to the post made on her Instagram, a communication channel during the climbing period, she performed the feat on today's date (05/23) at 10:24 in Nepales time, that is, 1:39 in Brasília time, the first Latin American black woman in history to conquer the highest place in the world.
"No dream is greater than our ability to realize it. This achievement is ours, for Aretha and for each of you, who believed and trusted this unparalleled woman and her journey of self-transformation and socioenvironmental regeneration. Thank you, from deep in our hearts. And may Aretha be the first of MANY ", wrote the team on Instagram of the athlete.

Campinas mountaineer collects recyclable waste to realize dream of climbing Mount Everest

To reach the top of Mount Everest, Aretha Duarte must first build his own mountain.
A mountain that receives half a ton of recyclable garbage collected every day from the streets of Campinas to help raise the R $ 375 thousand necessary for her to fulfill her dream and become the first black Brazilian mountaineer to reach the highest peak in the world.
- I already worked for the mountaineering operator I work for. But I needed to supplement my income. Since April 2020, I started to see a lot of garbage and waste scattered around the city and I thought I could use that to convert into money for my project. It was something that was available and that didn't need to take anything from anyone - says Aretha.
She was once at the foot of Mount Everest, in 2013, during an expedition, but, at that moment, climbing the 8,840 meters did not seduce the mountaineer. Now, the location was chosen by her to celebrate her ten-year career.

- When I was there, I didn't have that desire. Most people wanted to climb Mount Everest for status. It is not something I believe, I do not think it is the appropriate philosophy for mountaineering. But when I saw a photo from there later, from the Valley of Silence, which is part of the mountain, I thought: "Caracas, what a beautiful and wonderful place", and I started to want to visit.
Aretha's passion for mountaineering was born during college. She grew up on the outskirts of Campinas and had her first contact with the sport during the Physical Education course.
- I got to know mountaineering from a visit to a company in Campinas that worked with it. I attended a lecture, I was excited about the possibility of practicing a sport on the mountain and also in the middle of nature. That was how a passion to visit these environments began to rise within me.
Since then, Aretha has climbed Mount Aconcagua five times in Argentina, the highest in the Americas, at almost 7,000 meters above sea level, and has also been to Venezuela, Bolivia, Ecuador, Africa and Russia as an expedition guide.
- This kind of mountain experience is incredible. I always learn from a cultural and also a personal point of view. I always come back differently, enhanced and transformed from this type of experience. Visiting different countries, cities and cultures makes you more tolerant, more respectful of others and more connected to the world.

Aretha's physical preparation has lasted a year to withstand the rarefied air, negative temperatures and winds of more than 300 kilometers per hour. The challenge requires discipline and intense resistance training.
The task force also counts on the help of friends, family and people that Aretha has never seen, with donation campaigns on the internet and also in "word of mouth". The grandmother's house, for example, became a warehouse for the materials collected by Aretha.

- These 90 years I am proud of her. I see her as a golden person, very hardworking, who never gave her mother a job. It is a golden girl - said the owner Josefa Aparecida Duarte.
Soon, the recyclables that fill the car's bucket will give way to Aretha's suitcases to make another dream come true for her and also for the whole Duarte family, even with a tight heart of concern.
- I always believed it would be possible, because she has the will, she has potential, she goes to fight, she doesn't give up - praised mother Euleide Antônia de Freitas.
