SVG: Protests in Kingstown over Public Health Act

People have heeded the call of the trade union movement in St Vincent and the Grenadines to protest against proposed amendments to the Public Health Act.

Of major concern to them is the proposal to remove the word ‘voluntary’ before the word ‘immunisation’ in the Act as well as the issue of exemptions.

Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves explained yesterday that the proposed amendment to the Public Health Act would seek to tidy up any controversies in the making of regulations, where the regulations are going to require certain public sector jobs in the Central Government and the State Enterprises, would have a requirement of taking the vaccine.

But the protesters today are in disagreement, stating it's ‘their body, their choice.’

SVG’s Opposition Leader Dr Godwin Friday informed the protesters in Kingstown, that according to information he has received on the amendment for exemptions under the section of the Public Health Act, one can be obtained through a doctor but pending the approval of the Chief Medical Officer.
