SANTIAGO, Dec 14 (Reuters) - Chile's presidential election race is tightening ahead of a polarized runoff on Sunday, with ultra-conservative Jose Antonio Kast narrowing the gap to leftist former student leader Gabriel Boric as the two compete for key middle ground votes.
A private survey from pollster Cadem, seen by Reuters, showed Kast with 36% of the voting intention, just 3-points behind Boric, half the gap there had been at the end of last month shortly after the Nov. 21 first round vote.
That would translate into a 52%-48% win for Boric once non-valid votes were removed, compared with a 54%-46% victory in the same poll on Nov. 26. The poll of 1,000 people from Dec. 9-10 had a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points, it said.
The narrower gap sets the scene for a knife-edge run-off vote, the first presidential decider since Chile was rocked by widespread protests two years ago that saw months of marches as well as street violence in protest against inequality.
