SAO PAULO/AMSTERDAM, Dec 15 (Reuters) - Six European supermarket chains, including two owned by Dutch firm Ahold Delhaize (AD.AS) and a Carrefour (CARR.PA) subsidiary, said on Wednesday they would stop selling some or all beef products from Brazil due to links with destruction of the Amazon rainforest.
The pledges ranged from supermarket chain Lidl Netherlands, which committed to stop selling all beef originating in South America starting in 2022, to more focused decisions to halt sales of certain corned beef or beef jerky products. Many of the products affected are linked to the world's largest meatpacker, JBS SA (JBSS3.SA).
The boycotts are in response to an investigation by Brazilian publication Reporter Brasil that alleged JBS indirectly sourced cows from illegally deforested areas, in a scheme known as "cattle laundering."
This occurs when cattle raised on an illegally deforested plot of land are sold to a legitimate farm before sale to a slaughterhouse, to hide its origin.

Trump administration showers Brazilian crooks with $62M bailout money meant for struggling U.S. farmers

The Trump administration has forked over more than $62 million taxpayer cash that was supposed to be earmarked for struggling American farmers to a massive meatpacking company owned by a couple of corrupt Brazilian brothers.
The Department of Agriculture announced a contract in January to purchase $22.3 million worth of pork from plants operated by JBS USA, a Colorado-based subsidiary of Brazils JBS SA, which ranks as the largest meatpacker in the world.
The bailout raised eyebrows from industry insiders at the time, as it was sourced from a $12 billion program meant for American farmers harmed by President Trumps escalating trade war with China and other countries.
But previously undisclosed purchase reports obtained by the Daily News this week reveal the administration has since issued at least two more bailouts to JBS, even as Trumps own Justice Department began investigating the meatpacker, whose owners are Joesley and Wesley Batista two wealthy brothers who have confessed to bribing hundreds of top officials in Brazil.
Both brothers have spent time in jail over the sweeping corruption scandal.
