Cuba's vaccine success story sails past mark set by rich world's Covid efforts

General Máximo Gómez, a key figure in Cuba’s 19th-century wars of independence against Spain once said: “Cubans either don’t meet the mark – or go way past it.”

A century and a half later, the aphorism rings true. This downtrodden island struggles to keep the lights on, but has now vaccinated more of its citizens against Covid-19 than any of the world’s major nations.

More than 90% of the population has been vaccinated with at least one dose of Cuba’s homegrown vaccines, while 83% have been fully inoculated. Of countries with populations of over a million, only the United Arab Emirates has a stronger vaccination record.

“Cuba is a victim of magical realism,” said John Kirk, professor emeritus of Latin American studies at Dalhousie University, Canada. “The idea that Cuba, with only 11 million people, and limited income, could be a biotech power, might be incomprehensible for someone working at Pfizer, but for Cuba it is possible.”

That's a 7.73 fold increase. Though they are currently at a very low 5 daily new cases per 100,000 (7 day moving average). Very low compared to say the U.S. at 176 per 100,000 or even Germany's 37 (Germany is the "model" country right now of the major European countries).

Neighbor Mexico is at 6 per 100,000 and 14 day change is +320% (a 4.2-fold increase)

Cuba and Mexico's numbers from the table, the rest from the map.

But if the vaccines keep people out of the hospital and morgue, that's the most important thing.

Would anyone in the USA lend themselves to be inoculated by a Cuban vaccine???

Doctors from Cuba are not what they claim to be, they are actually "curanderos" more than doctors, there may be a few who are really good, but the majority, and those they have "exported" to other countries, like Venezuela, Brazil, etc. have killed more people than cured of diseases that required knowledgeable medical doctors. The only thing they can do safely is prescribe aspirin, other than that? run away from them.

They have created a myth about their medical achievements, just like Colombians created a myth of their coffee with Juan Gonzalez, it is all marketing, but far from reality.
