Arizona man found guilty of bulk cash smuggling into Mexico

Apr 30, 2022, 2:00 PM

BY KTAR.COM
PHOENIX — An Arizona man was found guilty of trying to smuggle just over $200,000 in United States currency into Mexico on Wednesday.

Charles Robert Wright, 61, of Tucson, attempted to leave the U.S. on April 18, 2021, through the Lukeville Port of Entry when his vehicle underwent X-ray inspection, which showed abnormalities in the roof, the United States Attorney’s Office in Arizona said in a press release.

During the outbound inspection, Wright denied taking over $10,000 in his Winnebago Adventurer.

A search of his vehicle, conducted by Customs and Border Protection officers, led to two bags of money in the non-factory compartment and 10 individually wrapped cellphone packages with U.S. currency inside.
