LIMA ( Associated Press) Peru on Friday recognized the existence of five indigenous peoples who live in isolation in a remote forested region of the Amazon along an area larger than Puerto Rico and the border with Ecuador.
The recognition comes nearly two decades later, when, in 2003, Amazonian indigenous organizations called on Peru to protect these isolated peoples: the Awa, the Zaparo, the Taushiro, the Tagayeri and the Taromene. The Tagayeri and Taromene are across the border because they also live in Ecuador, which has been a territory recognized by that country since 2007.
The Ministry of Culture indicated in a statement that the state, through supreme decree, has recognized the rights of Peruvians living in these five cities located within the Loreto region.
Deputy Minister Rosilda Nunta said that the recognition is an important step towards the request to create a Napo, Tigre and Tributaries Indigenous Reserve that they are managing to guarantee the protection of rights, habitat and conditions that ensure survival. Huh. Indigenous in isolation.
