12,000-year-old elephant remains discovered in Chile

Updated: 2022-09-28 10:21:50 KST

The remains of a 12-thousand year-old elephant have been discovered in Chile.

Called the "Gomphotheres", the extinct relative of the modern elephant once roamed southern Chile.
Its remains were found in the glacial lake of Tagua Tagua.

Scientists believe that humans once worked in groups to hunt the elephant, which could reach three meters in height and weigh up to four metric tons.

The discovery could help scientists analyze how changes in climate during that period affected animals in the region.
