El Salvador closes polls measuring ruling party support in municipalities

San Salvador, Mar 3 (EFE).- El Salvador held municipal elections this Sunday, marked by a reduction in the number of mayors, which define whether citizens endorse the municipal management of the ruling Nuevas Ideas (NI) party.

Some 5.5 million people were summoned by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) to elect municipal councils and deputies of the Central American Parliament (Parlacen).

TSE President Dora Esmeralda Martínez said in a press conference ahead of the closing of the polling stations, that “citizens have been able to vote without any inconvenience” and that they overcame the delays of the February elections “with substantial improvements.”

Deputy Marcela Villatoro, from the opposition Nationalist Republican Alliance party (Arena, right), claimed that among the irregularities detected during election day were the transfer of voters between municipalities so that they could vote where they did not belong, in favor of the NI.

“All of this is electoral fraud and is (condemned) with a prison sentence,” said the legislator.
