Eldest son of Chilean dictator Pinochet skips court date claiming lower back pain

Eldest son of Chilean dictator Pinochet skips court date claiming lower back pain
By The Associated Press February 12, 2013 3:06 PM

SANTIAGO, Chile - The eldest son of the late Chilean dictator Gen. Augusto Pinochet has failed to show up for a scheduled court appearance on fraud charges, claiming he suffers from extreme lower back pain.

Augusto Pinochet Hiriart was expected in court Tuesday to hear the charges against him. He is accused of writing $8,000 in bad checks.

Pinochet Hirart's attorney says he didn't go because he has lumbago.

Gen. Pinochet died under house arrest in December 2006, before he could be tried on charges of illegal enrichment and human rights violations.

Chile's government says 3,095 people were killed during Pinochet's 1973-1990 regime.
