We must speak plainly about what is happening in Cuba.

Cuba is our Caribbean neighbour. Their doctors and teachers have supported countries across our region, including Jamaica. Our histories are connected, and we care deeply about the Cuban people.

Today, many Cubans are facing serious economic hardship, energy shortages, and growing humanitarian challenges. We are sensitive to their struggles. But we must also recognise that a prolonged crisis in Cuba will not remain there. It can impact migration, security, and economic stability across the Caribbean, including Jamaica.

Jamaica stands for democracy, human rights, accountability, and open, market-based economies. I believe lasting stability comes when people have opportunity, a voice in their governance, and the freedom to build and invest.

This moment calls for responsible leadership and constructive dialogue, particularly between Cuba and the United States, to ease tensions and promote reform and stability.

Jamaica will continue to stand in solidarity with the Cuban people while supporting practical steps that lead to stability and shared prosperity for our region.

Before Castro Cuba had the highest per capita income in the western hemisphere while also having the highest level of poverty. Once Castro got power he nationalized the shit out of just about everything to level the gross economic disparity. The formerly morbidly wealthy Cubans fled to Miami. They’ve allied with American conservatives ever since to get their wealth back. They don’t seem to care that it’s regular Cubans in Cuba who’ve had to suffer from American embargoes and economic pressure ever since.

Right after Castro took power he sought better relations with the US but the wealthy Miami Cubans nixed that. Russia offered him aid just to screw with the US and hardcore Russian style communism was the result. That was a long, long time ago. Even while Castro was still alive they were allowed some free market action to develop. If the US ever let go of its anti-Cuban policies Cuba would finally have a chance to thrive. Before you know it full bore communism would disappear. Cubans in Cuba would have a chance at a better life. The US would have a better neighbor next door.
