December 1999. I hadn't heard as many of these forecasts of doom recently and was beginning to worry. They generally die down only right before the next recession.

I remember y2k all the people going to the gas station buying 10 gallons of gas and stuff and I thought to myself Why are they not listening to reason ? We knew weeks before that nothing would happen but the fear mongers got their message out there to sell more useless product , generators and freeze dried food

They're stuffing those bunkers full of guns, ammo and canned goods, so far so good. They're also trying to stock staples that will be infested and/or rancid by the time they need to use them and they're not stocking things like bandages and penicillin. I'm afraid their exercise in solitary survival will last only until they get the first toothache.

ETA: anyone who wants to know real post apocalypse survival strategies needs to talk to street people. Homeless people are a treasure trove of survival skills and they're well worth talking to in order to learn some of them. They share freely.

staying healthy is better.
I could probably call myself a prepper, but I do it for different reasons. I've noticed that as the seasons move on, the power outages are getting more and more frequent, and for more minor storms. The power grid is old, patched up, and fragile.
How many of us are prepared to go without power for weeks? I think a major failure is coming sooner than later, and I will still be enjoying freshly ground coffee when the lights are out.

and yes, people that have been homeless or an extended period are the ultimate survivalists.
I volunteer a few times a week at a homeless shelter, and talk all the time with them about staying cool in the heat, and staying warm in the cold. they are the ultimate source of knowledge for how to live without an income or regular shelter.

If, and thats a big if, a major disaster strikes, the one thought that keeps going through my head (I think its a bible passage) "the last shall be first and the first shall be last". All the wealth and cash the rich have hoarded will be worthless and the people that will thrive are those that have learned to live with little or nothing. Let them build their bunkers and dig their holes. If that day comes, just lock them in their own bunkers, and the rest of us can move on.

6. I'm expecting a crash but not the kind that a bunker would be of any value.

It really bothers me that the stock market is almost back to where it was before the last crash. Does this bother anyone else?

This unto itself would not be so worrisome if some changes to bank and financial corporation regulations and accountability had been made after the last crash. But nothing has really changed the economic environment. In fact I believe the job destroyers and financial firms doubled down on the stupid they did before the last crash. So, we seem all set for the 2nd Great Recession.

So prepping for something would be a good idea.

I read that Spain had a bank run going on yesterday. We still are on a razors edge for a domino type global collapse.

Have you noticed Walmart is now devoting 20-30 feet of top-to-bottom shelf space for survival foods? Scores of millions of people must indicate they want it for them to take notice. Walmart isn't disturbed, they do market analysis, and their market analysis says people are afraid for their future, and have been for some time.

Those on TV are just sensationalizing eye candy to sell soap. The real question is what's the effect of unresolved fear and uncertainty on scores of millions of hard-working, (or who desire to work) people? Will the rethugs be able to create enough paranoia to sway the vote, (beyond their theft)?

For the harvesting and something like this will draw them out.

I live in the coastal region, so preparing is a prudent thing to do. Nothing like a change in the trajectory of a hurricane to empty store shelfs of bread, water, and batteries. I was sitting pretty when Ike rolled through. I normally have a year of supplies in the pantry, extra meeds, and a full tank of gas. No need to stand in line for me. Spent most of my time helping friends and got invited to some nice block parties for my efforts.

I have looked into bank runs and holidays. I have studied the markets and what happened in the depression. I feel as prepared as I can be which gives me peace of mind....a priceless thing any time.

If we didn't flood here, we would have root cellars. Can't do the attic thing because roofs tend to peel off in high winds.

Another year or two of bad droughts like the one we just had, and the shit could start hitting the fan pretty hard. And since the drought is now being linked to a shift in the jet stream due to the melting Arctic ice cap, it could very well become a common event.

These Prepper People Think that they actually need 6 months of food stocked up and that a collapse is Immanent

I feel Sorry for them They are wasting all their money on irrational fears , Nothing like that could ever happen in America
and If it did the government has plans to help with Aid , National Guard, redcross , and I think They even signed an agreement with Canada a few years back that our military would help canada in crisis and canadas Military would help ours in a major crisis

People Like this patriotsurvivor guy should be locked up before he goes crazy and hurts someone

Yes. there are crazies out there digging holes in the ground. There are also millions of Americans responding to the Federal governments recommendation to prepare (READY.gov).

War with Iran and an explosion in the Middle East could see a significant increase in terrorism in the US including cyber attacks on our infrastructure. If the power grid goes down in major cities for weeks/months, it would be a disaster.

Hope for the best, prepare for the worst. btw, I am a progressive.

bad idea. We are trying to feed ourselves from our small acreage and the price of food has justified this practice. As to their form of prepping most of them think they can predict what is coming in the future and are preparing for just that incident. I told my children to continue to live their lives as if things were going to work out and be prepared for general emergencies.
