HUH??? I thought that definition of a "dead-end job" was that there was no hope for promotion ...

to the next lowest, I guess.
At a factory I worked at, the lowest people on the totem pole were the "line people". Then there were "group supervisors" and above them, the "shift supervisors". A few locals became "group supervisors" and maybe 2 or 3 could expect to become a "shift supervisor" somewhere down the line. But that was it, as the company would bring in people from Michigan to fill the higher slots. So, like a "dead-end street", the locals could, possibly, travel a little way, but no further.
