Republican Crazy Talk About the Debt CeilingTuesday, October 8, 2013
by ROBERT REICH
"I would dispel the rumor that is going around that you hear on every newscast, that if we dont raise the debt ceiling, we will default on our debt," says Sen.Tom Coburn, R-Okla. We wont. Well continue to pay our interest.
This is crazy talk. While the Treasury Department could prioritize interest payments after October 17 the day the Treasury Department says it no longer has legal authority to pay the nations debts and not pay Social Security and Medicare, this would buy a few days at most.
Meanwhile, interest rates will soar, stock prices will plummet, the global economy will begin spiraling downward, and millions of Americans wouldnt receive their Social Security and Medicare.

I just sent a letter to my two Senators and Congressman. The reply (automated) from Rubio's office said that because of the shutdown, their offices are closed, and they will respond later.

(2,976 posts)5. How about this..
POTUS calls an emergency meeting of the Congress and offers the Repubs a repeal of the ACA in exchange for an 80% tax with no deductions for everyone making over $1,000,000.00 from any source of income starting January 1, 2014.
They get 24 hours. Take it or leave it. No amendments.
