Trade ministers from the United States and 11 other countries will open talks in Singapore on Saturday in an attempt to meet a US deadline to forge a trans-Pacific trade pact before the end of the year.
However, analysts said an agreement on the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) was unlikely to be reached during the four-day meeting, owing to differences on key issues such as intellectual property protection.
The TPP is being negotiated by 12 nations Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, the United States and Vietnam that together make up 40 percent of the global economy.
Washington has spearheaded the secretive talks, which have been denounced by non-government groups for their alleged lack of transparency.

(14,255 posts)Their base likely either will not understand how bad this is or understand and not care, or understand and look forward to more profit - the "keep your government hands off my Medicare" people, the people who will actually profit, the people who just don't think - these people will of course still vote GOP. They will, of course, blame anything that hurts them on Obama and the Dems, including Hillary. Democrats who understand what the TPP means will be dispirited. With good reason. The next corporate candidate has a hand in all of this.
Not sure where to go from here. I don't believe this administration cares one little bit if "the people" don't want this.

(5,610 posts)to FDR style representation.... (real Democratic principles, not corporate democratic policies)
Our SURE bet is Senator Bernie Sanders for President.
It no longer matters (for most) what letter they have behind their name, they need those corporate billion$ to get elected
and will do whatever it takes to get it.
We van all donate what we can afford to get this well Proven Progressive as our next POTUS.
The "Bully Pulpit" will be well used to put "people before profits" and Unite Americans to have "their representatives"
pass people first legislation.
It looks like we need a "party outsider" to return the Democratic party to it's "New Deal" platform.
Thankfully Sanders has a long track record that proves he wants nothing more than for Average Americans to
prosper and change the status quo.
We know this is a fact, we can no longer afford to listen to the party purists and their "spoiler" meme.
This is our chance to save America for the people, in a peaceful way.
