CUPERTINO, Calif. — Cupertino will become the first city west of the Rockies to get AT&T's super-fast broadband Internet service.

The San Jose Mercury News reports (http://bit.ly/1AxJAA9 ) AT&T will announce Wednesday that it will bring its GigaPower service to Apple's hometown.

The newspaper says GigaPower promises download speeds of up to one gigabit per second — which is fast enough to download a high-definition movie in 30 seconds. That's 100 times faster than the connection in the average American home.

AT&T says it plans to offer GigaPower to Cupertino residents as early as December, or early next year. The company hopes to eventually roll out the super-fast service to other Bay Area cities.

Given that they are currently charging me $41/month for not quite 3 whatevers, one wonders. Not that they will get it out to the boonies any time in this century anyway.

Comcast has the broadband monopoly in Boston, so a fast internets in my area is out of the question.

Were AT&T to become a broadband choice in Boston, I would dither for a while as I'm not a fan of the phone company.
