Obama signs stopgap bill averting shutdown

By Jordan Fabian

President Obama signed a stopgap spending bill on Friday to keep the government open for five days while lawmakers race to finish a long-term budget deal. Obama signed the measure, which funds the government through Dec. 16, just hours before a midnight deadline to avoid a shutdown.

The House passed the spending bill on Friday, one day after the Senate approved the measure.

Republicans and Democrats in Congress are working toward passing a year-long spending bill. But the two sides have been unable to reach a final agreement due a dispute over contentious policy riders.
