The ongoing battle over tariffs between President Trump and China is negatively affecting farmers across the US.
The conflict is expected to worsen as Trump instructed his aides on Friday to carry out his tariff plans of $200 billion in Chinese products. Even the cost of Hurricane Florence is made worse by the trade war.
The trade war is having impacts on all agricultural sectors, Gary Schnitkey, Professor in Farm Management at the University of Illinois, told Yahoo Finance in a phone interview.
According to a recent map, provided by the US Department of Agricultures Economic Research Service and highlighted by the farmdoc project at the University of Illinois, the net cash farm income has decreased in every American region in comparison to 2017.

I use to think that people who suffer when there is an alternative would learn a lesson and demand change. But that does not hold true for the deplorables.

Some deplorables will never learn - but some trump voters are slowly 'learning'.

(43 posts)partly because I really am a registered Democrat, and partly because I truly detest the Trump Administration and the current Republican Party.
I have no interest in any kind of board war or trolling. I'm 60 and have better things to do with my time, but you don't know that, so the question mark is understandable. I'll just say thank you, I appreciate it.
This country simply cannot afford another Trump or Pence term. The only way to stop that is to see a Democrat beat them, and preferably crush them, in 2020. That must be the paramount political goal of most Americans. IMHO.

(10,192 posts)But mostly it's GMO crap. You can always tell the GMO corn, the dead weeds under the small, one to 2 foot, stalks. When I grow corn, I have mulch or piles of weeds pulled from around the corn or frequently both. Corn lets every damn weed grow up around it, until it gets tall enough to shade them out. But if you don't keep weeding it, the weeds will smother the stalks out.
I really appreciate this info. Now, I know why so many chemical farmers dumped corn at the farmers' market.
A poster here claimed there was no change in farm revenue this year. Glad to have the facts. I knew my neighbors were kind of down in the mouth. Luckily for me, my customers love my organic baby and full ear corn and are willing to pay me a fair market price for it.

(43 posts)affected, though a drop of 13% is still a major hit. I wonder if it is because there are still regional grocery store chains and a plethora of small grocers and farmers' markets that at least buy regionally in this neck of the woods. That's sheer speculation on my part; I really don't know.

(3,496 posts)Of course this doesn't consider any multiplier effects. Figure less farm income, less equipment purchases, less overall spending in farm country, possibly more missed loan payments leading to more foreclosures. Poor performance at rural banks leading to less investment available for farm improvements, seed/fertilizer purchases and so on. But I guess we should see some lower prices at the grocery store (maybe).
It may take years for this to actually have an impact, if it does at all. For all the bragging farmers do about their impact on the US economy, their contributions are relatively small on the GDP scale and farmers make up less than 2% of the workforce in the US; the curse of being one of the most productive workforces in the world.

(43 posts)Good to know. Maybe that's one reason the Trump Administration doesn't seem to give much of a shit about farmers. Maybe they figure they can sucker the stupid farmers into voting for them again.
Maybe they're right; I don't know yet.
