In an effort to continue to help ease the financial pain millions of Americans are enduring amid the novel coronavirus pandemic, three Democratic senators made a headline-grabbing proposal this week to expand upon the $1,200 stimulus checks many have already received.
On Friday, Democratic Sens. Ed Markey, Kamala Harris, and Bernie Sanders introduced a bill that if passed into law would set up a monthly payment program for U.S. residents making less than $120,000 a year.
All qualifying residents would be sent $2,000 a month until the pandemic was over, regardless of whether they had a Social Security Number or had paid taxes last year.
Additionally, married couples who file taxes jointly would be entitled to $4,000 as well as an additional $2,000 for every child, up to three kids.
The Monthly Economic Crisis Support Act, which would last until three months after the end of the pandemic and is retroactive to March, would also prevent debt collectors from taking payments.

The GOP counteroffer? Another cool million for the Caymans crowd.

Newest Reality
(12,712 posts)This is really not optional, that is, if you want to keep millions of people afloat and out of poverty, hunger and homelessness.
It's good for the landlords and businesses, of course. Any counterargument should explain how this is not PUMPING money, mainlining it, right back into the economy while creating a basis for some kind of recovery.
If too many people are economically ruined by this, there will be only one real benefit: it will be an employers market with all the bad things that brings, such as very low wages, no benefits, no sick days, easy abuse and exploitation, less job stability, more on-call hours, etc. That would only serve to take a large portion of Americans down into the pits and that's not going to revive an economy, so the idea does not hold.
This money will also prevent the inevitable unrest that could turn into some very ugly results and harm everyone and the economy even more. It will also assuage the severe emotional and psychological impacts of the severe hardships, insecurity and fear that both the pandemic and its economic effects have had.
No matter what the Republicans grouse about, this has to be done. That is, if you do want to seed and encourage a better resolution to the damage in the long-run. I know they don't have compassion or empathy or concern for the people, they could do this out of self-interest for their more important constituents of the MIC. Why let things turn into a total, chaotic mess, unless you don't really want the people to recover?

(24,396 posts)Thats what we hear all the time in this country when we contemplate the cost of things.
When you get that hospital bill for the procedure that saved your life:
Its only money. At least youve got your health.
When you get the bill from the mechanic for your car repair:
Its only money. At least your car is in great shape now and that safety issue is resolved.
When you overspend on your kids wedding/ college tuition, etc:
Its only money. Your kids are worth it.
Yet when it comes to THIRTY MILLION Americans suddenly out of work, its suddenly NOT only money when it comes to providing relief funds to get people through a disaster.

No money in the hands of those who spend it, means no economy.
