Union Confronts Fetterman Amid Looming Shutdown

Service Employees International Union (SEIU) members have reportedly sent letters to Sens. John Fetterman (D‑PA) and David McCormick (R‑PA) urging the extension of enhanced Affordable Care Act premium tax credits set to expire. They warned that allowing the credits to lapse could increase premiums and reduce health coverage for low-income Pennsylvanians. The outreach came amid broader advocacy efforts to maintain healthcare affordability ahead of upcoming legislative deadlines.
The union reportedly hand-delivered letters and met with staff in Harrisburg to present worker concerns. Fetterman supported extending the credits but said he won’t vote for a government shutdown to secure them.
Fetterman wrote, "I enthusiastically support extending the ACA tax credits." He added, "I’ll never vote to shut our government down over that or any reason. It’s a core responsibility of Congress to maintain a functioning government and I refuse to hold it as hostage."
Reports have indicated that as many as 150,000 individuals could drop coverage if enhanced subsidies lapse. The union cited the figures to urge congressional action.
Organizers and home care workers warned that losing the credits could sharply raise premiums. The union argued higher uninsured rates would strain providers.
Advocates further warned that higher rates could increase uncompensated care for hospitals and clinics. Pennie, Pennsylvania’s health marketplace, estimates 450,000 of 500,000 users could face higher premiums.
House Republicans proposed a continuing resolution funding government operations through 2026 without extending the subsidies. However, Democrats have pushed alternatives to make the enhanced credits permanent.
