MINNEAPOLIS - More than 6,000 janitors and security officers, frustrated with takeback demands by employers, plan a Feb. 9 strike vote. They demonstrated their determination with a march through Minneapolis skyways Thursday.
Weve tried to bargain in good faith, said Demetruis Moore, a member of the bargaining committee whos worked as a security officer for more than five years. But its clear they have no intention of doing so. Either come to the table and bargain in good faith, or were done. Well see you in the streets.
The workers are represented by Service Employees International Union Local 26, which has contracts with Twin Cities and suburban companies providing cleaning and security services in office buildings and other facilities. For the first time, all their contracts are being negotiated simultaneously.
The current pacts expired Dec. 31, and union members said they are frustrated with what they call bad faith bargaining by management.
