In a world where corporations routinely outsource manufacturing to developing countries or move their plants to the South to cut production and employment costs, Sumners Torklift International is going against the trend.
The privately held manufacturer of recreational vehicle parts and accessories told its 55 employees last week it is raising their minimum wage to $15 an hour.
Those raises, effective this week, will raise some workers pay by $4 an hour. About 40 percent of the companys workers had pay rates below $15 an hour. Theyll all see the boosts in compensation in their next paychecks.
Its something weve been thinking about for some time, said Jay Taylor, the companys general manager. Its been one of our key objectives to implement to elevate our game for the future.
