Strike at Pantex continues

AMARILLO -- As U.S. Rep. Mac Thornberry visited the Pantex Plant Monday, workers from the Metal Trades Council stood at the picket line outside, asking that their benefits not be cut.

“Mac Thornberry did not stop at our picket,” said Joanna Newkirk, member of the Metal Trades Council, “We would have at least wanted him to acknowledge us.”

The strike at the Pantex facility is going on its third week after members of the Metal Trades Council rejected the idea of a benefits-valuation, which would compare Pantex workers’ benefits with similar workers in the area.

“A lot of people don’t understand the work we do. Nobody else does what we do,” said Daniel Bettencourt at the picket line.
