This has been on PBS tonight:
The Mine WarsGo inside the coal miners' bitter battle for dignity at the dawn of the 20th century with The Mine Wars. The struggle over the material that fueled America led to the largest armed insurrection since the Civil War and turned parts of West Virginia into a bloody war zone.
A very interesting documentary about mine workers organizing to win their rights from West Virginia coal companies. Definitely worth watching!

(42,641 posts)3. What was very interesting was the class-based analysis,
and the observation that the state was being run by the coal companies. Ironic because West Virginia is still being run by the coal companies, and the miners are still poor.
These resource rich areas are little better than third world countries. The land and the people are exploited for the benefit of outsiders.
