GLENWOOD, Iowa A fired Mills County Treasurer's Office employee faces prison time after an audit uncovered embezzled vehicle registration fees.
Tammy Gammon remains in jail on eight felony counts that authorities said stem from her time in the Treasurer's Office's automobile department. Gammon is accused of taking more than $36,000 in fees that should have been used for county and state government services.
According to a special investigation by the Iowa State Auditor's Office, Gammon would take annual registration payments and enter information into an Iowa Department of Transportation database, then void the transaction and keep the fees. The practice dates to at least 2005, the report said.
The audit found 182 such transactions, with fees typically around $200. The actions caused problems for drivers, whose cars appeared unregistered in the state database. Some drivers may have been improperly ticketed or warned by police for not having their cars registered, while others may have been forced to pay extra fees and late payments when they renewed their registrations the following year, Mills County Attorney Eric Hansen said.
