Ravitch: Please Help Krugman Understand the Common Core

>>>Paul Krugman posted this commentary about the Common Core standards. Clearly he has never read them and has no idea about the legitimate concerns that teachers and principals have. Instead, he echoes the claim by Times’ writer Bill Keller that the opponents are nearly all rightwing extremists. I just left a short comment, which has not been moderated and approved yet. I expressed my concern about the lack of field testing and the now evident increases in achievement gaps. Raising the bar does not help kids clear it; it just increases the numbers who can’t clear it. You should add yours.>>>>

explore much outside his field. Or maybe he's written before about education? I don't remember.

Hopefully he takes his reader-response seriously and he'll set his mind to figuring -out what the whole thing is all about.

Baby steps, Dr. Krugman, baby steps.

>>>A professor who forgot to do his homework. As a major fan, this was a very disappointing read. There is a tidal wave of opposition to the Common Core on both sides of the political spectrum

I am a left leaning progressive; a life-long democrat, entering my 34th year in the classroom. The Common Core "State" Standards and the companion APPR is by far and away the most professionally insulting "reform" ever conceived. If school districts really want to attract the best and the brightest, this new reform movement is doing its best to drive experienced teachers out and prospective candidates away from the profession. And, we are already seeing the backlash from over-tested students who routinely comment how they hate school more than ever.

This is not surprising since millions upon millions of students were unable to meet state standards under NCLB - and the solution adopted was to make the new standards . . . much. MORE. rigorous. Brilliant! >>>
