By Michael E. Mann, Susan Joy Hassol and Tom Toles
[font size=3]It is easy to understand why advocates for climate action have become somewhat dispirited in recent months. In the space of less than a year, we've seen the U.S. go from playing a leading role in international climate negotiations to now being the only nation in the world to renege on its commitment to the 2015 Paris climate accord.
It is in this environment of defeat and despair that we've witnessed a dramatic rise in the prominence of climate doomismcommentary that portrays climate change not just as a threat that requires an urgent response but also as an essentially lost cause, a hopeless fight. Some of the more egregious examples can be found among fringe characters such as ecologist Guy McPhersona doomist cult hero who insists that exponential climate change likely will render human beings and all other species extinct within 10 years.

Such rhetoric is in many ways as pernicious as outright climate change denial, for it leads us down the same path of inaction. Whether climate change is a hoax (as President Trump has asserted) or beyond our control (as McPherson insists), there would obviously be no reason to cut carbon emissions.

(13,485 posts)I have learned to lighten up a bit. It all depends on what is important to an individual and how much they would fight no matter what the possibilities. I thrive on knowing, others can't even function if there is a possibility of a worst case scenario.
I would never give up my fight for the earth or humanity but I need all the info. I've also come to respect those who don't want all possibilities in mind. Those who would give up would give up anyway so I dont think they matter.

(38,317 posts)... we humans are not the only intelligent sentient beings on this planet and a lot of them are suffering and facing extinction TODAY.
Humans are likely to survive this extinction event, for the short term anyways, but only because there are so many of us.
The very wealthy might not be among the survivors...

This airplane we're all passengers in is going down. Sorry, there's no way back. We can work together to achieve some kind of survivable crash landing, or we can pretend magic or omnipotent deities will keep us safe and then we all die a fiery death when the plane corkscrews into the ground at 600 miles per hour.
In earth's history many innovative species have come and gone. We humans are not the first, nor will we be the last. 100,000 years from now everything we modern humans know, this world civilization many of us now enjoy, is nothing more than curious layer of trash in the geologic record, and it seems very likely there won't be any humans around to study it.

(13,485 posts)and the method of the exit. Do we pass along a remnant of our existance to the next intelligence that rises or do we just snuff ourselves out like a cigarette butt.
I won't repeat my usual spiel from here...
Although on a happier note, I think the most likely intelligence to rise on this planet after us would be the squid.

(1,527 posts)Telling people that they could get Cancer, Emphysema,, and Heart disease I guess is just scare tactics. Why I know a guy that was 83 and smoked every day so this is obviously a big hoax.
Of course I watched my father in law die at 47 from lung cancer. Hey he had even stopped smoking 2 years earlier when he had his heart attack. And the doctor who diagnosed the lung cancer said that he had about 6 months to live, and he lived for over 9 months so obviously that Doc was just a doomer.
I find it interesting that most of the climate scientist say we are going to the same sorry condition. The real difference mostly seems to be how fast we get to the doom state, and whether there is some right action that can change the outcome.
With the politicians in charge now, I don's see anything being done even if it is not too late already.
