Meat eaters are destroying the planet, says report

Meat consumption is devastating some of the world’s most valuable and vulnerable regions, due to the vast amount of land needed to produce animal feed, a report has warned.

The growing popularity of a Western diet, which contains high levels of meat and dairy, means an area 1.5 times the size of the European Union would be saved if global consumption of animal products was reduced to meet nutritional requirements, according to the WWF.

The new report, Appetite for Destruction, launched at the Extinction and Livestock Conference, says the consumption of animal products is leading to a vast and increasing amount of land being used for crops.

“A staggering 60 per cent of global biodiversity loss is down to the food we eat. We know a lot of people are aware that a meat-based diet has an impact on water and land, as well as causing greenhouse gas emissions, but few know the biggest issue of all comes from the crop-based feed the animals eat.”

We learned to eat sushi, overcoming our initial revulsion. Why not termites, crickets etc?

But I've had roasted crickets. Tastes like whatever you cook it with.

it isnt so much meat eaters as meat producers, imho.
i keep chickens, and i know someone w a flock of a couple dozen that scavenges wasted food to feed them. so much wasted food out there, it would likely feed enough chickens to feed us all.

there have been experiments in feeding certain maggots to cows. not that hard to do, and def more protein than corn.
lots of people feed black soldier fly maggots to their chickens.

Maybe the Pope can bring back meatless Friday in the meantime

Plus I recently learned the harm of wasted food. It’s a big deal. My wife nags me about how I buy food and don’t eat it by expiration. I will try to be better.

There are many things we can do which will help.

My wife and I don't expect our dogs to be vegetarian.

People please spay and neuter your dogs. Maybe yourselves too. This world doesn't need more dogs or people.

Meat is not an ordinary part of my own diet, but it's not a religion. There's some fish in my freezer and organic free range chicken eggs in my refrigerator, and yes I know those chickens end up as canned soup and Taco Bell fajitas and chicken meat by-product dog food.
