Otherwise how did we get here?

Dont worry, this 9 yr old child is going to start a worldwide thermonuclear war that will wipe all of us AND the environment out long before these have any effect.

But, like I said, this has to be what we, as Americans, want.

On the one hand, we get the leadership we deserve. And we tolerate leadership that wants us stupid, sick, miserable and dead. Leadership with out a moral core. Does this reflect the soul of America? Or the lack thereof. In its place a dark evil morass.

On the other hand, then I think about nefarious voting strategies, gerrymandering, vote tampering, election fraud, etc. Constant and strong propaganda to a vulnerable American populace. Vulnerable because acquisition of critical thinking skills taught in college is financially out of reach for many. And a populace concerned with survival, finances, health, etc. may not have the energy to change the status quo.

Our leaders work for the rich and powerful. We don't have a representative democracy, we have an oligarchy.
That is one answer to your question about how we got here.

And his "approval" rating is dropping rapidly. In other countries don't they recall leaders, demand another election, when they lose the confidence of the people?

He is not a reflection of the majority. The soul of America is intact.

But the OP question is still a good one. How did we get here.

Helps to divide and conquer the populace as well as keep them docile and obedient.

But the orange F-Wad has taken this to a whole new level, to a point it may have the opposite effect.

Along the lines of "be careful what you ask for."

He ran for president merely to enhance his brand and his image. Image is mostly all that he has. His lack of business acumen meant he had to pretend to have an empire, and to rely on a carefully constructed persona, bluffing and threats. It was a successful strategy in his small world of New York real estate. His sociopathy was rewarded, and his narcissism constantly fed. His mental illness a perfect fit for his insular environment.

Then he was in effect promoted to a position far above his competence level. A position requiring an entirely new skill set. Because he has no self-awareness or insight he could not adapt to his new role. His hedonism, lack of a moral compass, and his total inability to perform the basics of his office exposed to the world. His grandiosity prevented him from at least surrounding himself with others who could cover for him and run the show. So now he is a laughing stock and subject to constant criticism and humiliation, even from his own circle of supporters, kryptonite to his narcissism. And for the first time in his life, he and his family face the possibility of legal consequences for their illegalities; Mueller rattles his cage. A con artist begins to crumble when the usual defenses no longer work.

And by all accounts he hates his new living quarters, hates having to work hard, hates the restraints and rules of his new job. Faced with a barrage of negative press, he is reduced to being Elvis at the end, shooting at the TV set.

He has traversed through Dante's circles of hell, circle by circle. And now finds himself in the 9th and last level of hell.
