Mercedes electric battery plant part of global strategy (al.com)

It will be sometime next year before work begins on the next phase of Mercedes-Benz's Tuscaloosa expansion.

The company's electric battery plant, announced in September as part of its $1 billion expansion, is expected to break ground sometime in 2018. The battery plant will be the company's fifth plant globally and set up electric vehicle production in Tuscaloosa.

The expansion announcement stated the company plans to produce its EQ-brand SUV, which will feature some elements of automated driving. Most of the $1 billion to be spent in Tuscaloosa is slated for the electric vehicle push.

Not much is known currently about the project, but some facts can be discerned by Mercedes-Benz's recent moves on electrification and how it fits into the overall plans for the Tuscaloosa expansion.

There's more info on Mercedes' EV plans in a more recent article, but it doesn't appear online yet. Maybe tomorrow.
