EPA's Pruitt violates Clean Air Act, Washington State AG Ferguson charges in lawsuit

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency boss Scott Pruitt is violating federal law by refusing to reduce methane emissions from oil and natural gas operations, Washington and 13 other states charged Thursday in a federal lawsuit.

Methane is many times more dangerous in trapping heat than carbon dioxide, and a majority of methane released into the atmosphere -- as much as 90 percent -- comes from existing refineries and processing plants.

"The Trump administration's continued insistence on protecting polluters and jeopardizing Washingtonians is wrong -- and illegal," said Washington AG Bob Ferguson.

It is the 24th time AG Ferguson has filed suit or joined a suit against the 45th president and his administration.

Instead of mitigating the threats big chicken farms pose for the Illinois River and surrounding communities, under the Pruitt-backed law, the chicken industry has increased its operations in the watershed.
