Colorado: Spring Creek 3rd-Largest Fire In State History; Grows 15,000 Acres In 1 Day To 94,000+

Powerful, erratic winds continue to push the week-old Spring Creek wildfire through heavy forests and grasslands in south-central Colorado. The fire has destroyed at least 104 homes in its path. The fire has grown to 94,125 acres, making it the third-largest wildfire in state history. It has destroyed at least 104 residences and is only 5 percent contained.

A pre-evacuation order was issued Wednesday for all residents in the area south of the Huerfano-Las Animas County line south to Las Animas County Road 42 and east to Las Animas County Road 21.7 and west to Colorado 12. Existing evacuee orders remain in place because of the fast-moving fire.

Temperatures in the upper 80s and dry conditions continue to be a major problem. Wind gusts up to 25 mph and humidity between 8 and 11 percent were also challenging.

Firefighters working in the South Forbes area were focused on extinguishing hot spots. Fire authorities added another 271 firefighters to the the operation, bringing the total number of firefighters to 986.

How will insurance companies survive? Premiums will increase and people will choose to "go bare."

Company reserves are not unlimited.
