IOW, 3.7% of the entire country's population.
More than 70 people have died and dozens are missing as torrential rain hammered parts of Japan for a third day on Sunday, with the prime minister, Shinzo Abe warning that rescue workers faced a race against time.
Continued rainfall prompted disaster warnings on the south-western main islands of Kyushu and Shikoku, as local media reported the death toll had risen overnight to 76, with 92 people missing.
At one point, evacuation orders or advisories were issued for 4.72 million people, while around 48,000 members of the self-defence forces, police and firefighters were mobilised to search for trapped or injured people or to recover bodies, Kyodo news said.
EDIT
The heaviest rainfall Japan has seen in decades has caused widespread flooding and landslides a frequent hazard for people living in mountainous areas with reports of cars being swept way by floodwater and people taking refuge on the roofs of their inundated homes. Japan meteorological agency, which has issued its highest level warning for affected areas, said three hours of rainfall in one area in Kochi prefecture reached an accumulated 26.3cm (10.4 inches), the highest since such records started in 1976.

(24,324 posts)I posted about this flood several times with very little response.
And American news outlets are still salivating over the Thai boys (GLAD they are all safe) but we are talking more than 100 dead and millions evacuated...,.. and trump and whatever gets clicks...
I have friends in that part of Japan, in Kyoto and SW.. all are ok. But it is absolutely devastating...

(51,584 posts)I ended up googling weather in that area and it is bad. I am glad your friends are OK.

(24,324 posts)One frirnd lives in Okayama , one of the worst hit, but fortunately her family is all ok.
Her grand parents lost their house but, will make it ok.
8 million people were evacuated so far. Yikes.
I was just in Kyoto several months ago, walking along the Kamogawa after dinner with my almost girlfriend. ( Working on it, lol) A few days ago she sent pics.. not so bad in Kyoto. If things work out, i might just move to Kyoto, get the hell out of this godforsaken country.

(51,584 posts)a few coworkers and some former students who are from there. I think I learned about the people, culture, food and geography from Tony Bourdain mostly. He LOVES Japan (right after Vietnam).
I hope you do move over there, I would move under diff circumstances too. This country is literally making me more sick than I was before the election. I say good luck to the girlfriend situation and start packing!

(24,324 posts)At one time I was fluent enough in japanese to get around without using English. including enough reading.. now...no way..
She is 51. I am 74.. Not a deal breaker but... She is also a bit famous in several fields. me?.. nope.
We will see. I would say 75%-25% against success.
But Japan is a remarkable culture.. Hope you get to visit some time.
SUSHI !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BigmanPigman
(51,584 posts)started checking it out myself I got a serious craving for sushi. There is a place around the corner that has happy hour sushi prices...too good and convenient. I also had to go to my Asian supermarket and get soba noodles and dipping sauce (serious cravings). I am jealous of you, even if the odds aren't in your favor.

(33,512 posts)...Fukushima!
How many people were wiped out by radiation again?
Blues Heron
(5,931 posts)permanently. Why don't you go to Chernobyl and huff some classroom dust from one of the ruins and then get back to us how safe it is. Hint- you won't.
NNadir
(33,512 posts)I hear all the time from people who know nothing at all about radiation about Fukushima and Chernobyl. What I don't hear from them is about stuff that really matters.
Every fucking living organism on this fucking planet is contaminated with coal waste. Fucking seven million people DIE every fucking year from air pollution, and what do you care about?
Fukushima!?!
Fucking 7 million people per year, and that's not even counting climate change, just toxins accumulating in the lungs.
A comparative risk assessment of burden of disease and injury attributable to 67 risk factors and risk factor clusters in 21 regions, 19902010: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2010 (Lancet 2012, 380, 222460: For air pollution mortality figures see Table 3, page 2238 and the text on page 2240.)
You see that link above?
It's from something called a scientific paper in one of the world's most prestigious medical journals, assembled by academic physicians, epidemiologists, and health officials. It lists all of the main causes of human mortality on the planet.
Now just because there are complete idiots who focus their selective attention on radiation leaks from Fukushima, doesn't mean that scientists are required to be sheep and follow pop idiocy.
Opposition to nuclear power is a crime against humanity, and a crime against all future generations, because nuclear energy, even considering the big bogeymen at Chernobyl and Fukushima saves lives.

(1,091 posts)Every time I see a push to build nuclear plants in the US it has the US Govt providing the bulk of the loan guarantees. Who's going to pay for the incomplete nuke plants in South Carolina?
What do you think it costs for disaster insurance? Insurance works off known risks so when the latest estimate for Fukushima is at $120 billion dollars to clean up how much of the overhead of a nuclear power plant is just to pay the insurance?
Every time you jump up and down complaining about renewables I bet another windmill comes on line. You've been complaining about how in your view renewables are a waste of money and incapable of adding anything significant to the grid but from when I started on here Texas has gone from virtually nothing from wind to 17% of the yearly usage.
Please, continue jumping up and down.
