Investment in new nuclear power projects declines to 5-year low

http://www.kallanishenergy.com/2018/07/20/investment-in-new-nuclear-power-projects-declines-to-5-year-low/

Worldwide investment in nuclear power declined by nearly 45% in 2017, to $17 billion, according to the International Energy Agency.

Although spending on new reactors reached the lowest level in five years, investment on upgrades of existing units increased, World Nuclear News reported.

Of the four new reactors commissioned last year, three were in China. More than 5,000 megawatts-equivalent (MWe) of nuclear generating capacity was retired, leading to a net reduction of roughly 2,000 MWe in total nuclear capacity worldwide, Kallanish Energy calculates.

Capacity was still roughly 10,000 MW higher than in 2007. While roughly 60,000 MWe of nuclear power remains under construction worldwide, new construction starts totaled just over 3,000 MWe.
