Vern "New Yacht Tax Cut" Buchanan (R-FL) Shows His Deep Concern Re. Red Tides Blahblahblah

EDIT

Red tide is emerging as one of the central issues in the District 16 congressional race between Republican U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan and his Democratic challenger David Shapiro, with the candidates releasing dueling television ads on the environmental calamity.

Buchanan is touting his efforts to obtain funding to study red tide and mitigate its impacts, while Shapiro is highlighting Buchanan’s campaign contributions from the sugar industry — which is frequently blamed for fertilizer runoff that contributes to algae blooms — and support for legislation viewed by critics as weakening environmental protection.

Much of Florida’s Gulf Coast is being impacted by the worst red tide bloom in years. The toxic algae is fouling the air and water and causing massive sea life kills. The tourism industry is suffering as many visitors steer clear of the area.

Buchanan’s District 16 — which covers Manatee County, northern Sarasota County and part of Hillsborough County — includes a vast stretch of coastline impacted by red tide, from Anna Maria Island south to Longboat Key, Lido Key and Siesta Key. The algae bloom also has seeped into the area’s bays, bayous and canals.
