Congressional Democratic leaders plan to tell President Donald Trump on Tuesday that any agreement to improve the nations infrastructure must include funding to combat climate change. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer consider the effects of climate change among the greatest long-term challenges to the nations infrastructure, and will urge explicit funding to address it in any future legislation.
Schumer, a New York Democrat, and Pelosi, a California Democrat, sent Trump a letter on Monday saying that a big and bold infrastructure package must be comprehensive and include clean energy and resiliency priorities. They wrote, To truly be a gamechanger for the American people, we should go beyond transportation and into broadband, water, energy, schools, housing and other initiatives. We must also invest in resiliency and risk mitigation of our current infrastructure to deal with climate change.
EDIT
Privately, White House officials acknowledge the effects rising carbon dioxide emissions have had on the atmosphere and say the administration embraces private-sector innovation, such as the advent of carbon capture and storage technology, as a preferable way to fight climate change to government regulation. But Trump has repeatedly questioned the reality of climate change. I think somethings happening, Trump told CBS 60 Minutes in October. Somethings changing and itll change back again. I dont think its a hoax, I think theres probably a difference. But I dont know that its man-made.
Schumer will also propose funding for conservation projects, smart grid technology and energy efficiency in schools and other public buildings.

(6,046 posts)Trumps's lopsided tax cut is going to stick middle class and poor with bill for infrastructure. The tax cut for rich was partly designed to exempt them and big corporations from paying for the new infrastructure spending.
First big tax will be on gasoline and will erase or dwarf any cut that middle class may have gotten from recent tax cut law.
New big battlefront opening is infrastructure-who benefits and who pays. will it be a new green deal or mainly benefit mega corporations and super-rich, Russian oligarchs and politicians supported by corporate and Russian money?
The Russian oligarch Deripaska ( now exempted from sanctions so that he and his family can benefit from building an aluminum factory in Mitch McConnell's of Kentucky is a person to watch).
Another person/event to watch is Greg Craig and his upcoming trial, now scheduled for August, 2019, resulting from Mueller investigation. Greg is a Democratic lawyer who had ties to Manafort and who did work on behalf of the Russian-leaning president of the Ukraine.
Although Greg has worked in Democratic administrations, he was opposed to Hillary Clinton and reprtedly did not want Clinton to be Secretary of State,
I doubt Trump will be the candidate in 2020 and I believe certain influential Republicans will overtly or covertly back a Democrat whom they think will be least likely to inform the voters about Russian connections and the ties between Russia and big investors, or how Russia may be poised to benefit from American spending.
H Clinton's pro-human rights, pro- Russian democracy, and pro-Russian sanctions, and anti-Putin stances were the reason for Putin's attempt to defeat her.
So long as all these Russian connection remain hidden from the public, we will vote in a state of ignorance and are unlikely to become a more democratic and more equal country.
