95% Of Tasmania's Giant Kelp Forests Gone In 60 Years; Warming, Sea Urchins To Blame

Radio Report

Research published today has found giant kelp in Tasmania has declined by 95 per cent in the past 60 years.

Climate change is blamed for bringing warmer waters, low nutrients and a marine pest that east the kelp, sea urchins.

But there is some good news, with the scientists noticing some of the remaining kelp appears to be resistant to climate change and that will be used in restoration efforts.
