5, Count 'Em 5, Climate Refugee Emergencies That Are Going On Right Now

EDIT

1. Myanmar

Members of the long-persecuted Rohingya Muslim minority group have often been displaced in Myanmar, but conditions caused by climate change exacerbated their circumstances and the country's current refugee crisis. After large parts of Myanmar were devastated by flooding and landslides in 2015, hundreds of thousands fled inundated areas, including Rohingya people. In the following years, the Southeast Asian nation has undergone a political change and faced a number of health crises.

A surge of violence against the Rohingya in the summer of 2017 caused more than 700,000 to flee the country, the majority of which have gone to Bangladesh. In early July, massive flooding destroyed many of the temporary shelters of Rohingya refugees in the Cox’s Bazar settlement in Bangladesh, where over 900,000 refugees currently reside. According to the UNHCR, the vast majority of the Rohingya are women and children, and over 40% are under the age of 12.

EDIT

2. Syria

Civil war, not climate change, is commonly associated with the world’s worst refugee crisis. But a report published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that severe regional drought between 2006 and 2011 led to food shortages and illness in Syria and drove hundreds of thousands of residents to live in poor conditions on the outskirts of the country’s cities. It was these conditions that served as one of the primary triggers for the civil war that killed several hundred thousand and led to the refugee crisis. Further, the researchers concluded that climate change was a significant factor in the length and severity of the drought – the worst the country has faced in centuries – since normal variability in regional weather would not be sufficient to explain it.

There are roughly 5.6 million Syrians refugees living in neighboring countries. The majority of Syria’s refugees are in neighboring Turkey. In countries like Lebanon and Jordan, which are host to hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees, the vast majority of Syrian refugees do not live in organized camps and face severe poverty. Overall, there are nearly 13 million forcibly displaced Syrians, the largest such population in the world.

EDIT

3. South Sudan

South Sudan is the third largest source of refugees in the world, after Syria and Afghanistan, according to the UNHCR. More than 2 million have fled to other countries, primarily to neighboring Sudan, Uganda, and Ethiopia, as civil war continues to ravage the nation. Close to 2 million more have been displaced to other places within the country’s borders since the conflict began in 2013. According to the UNHCR, flooding, food shortages, and disease have worsened conditions for South Sudanese refugees, many of who remain homeless. The majority of the country's refugees are women and children. A report published by the United Nations Environment Program in 2018 found that worsening drought and flooding conditions have directly led to competition for resources and worsened the ongoing conflict. Gary Lewis, Director of UN Environment’s Policy and Program Division, said “The country’s fragile natural environment has suffered enormously; fighting over natural resources together with the impacts of climate change are factors in driving this vicious cycle.”

NY Times, Flooding of Coast, Caused by Global Warming, Has Already Begun
Scientists’ warnings that the rise of the sea would eventually imperil the United
States’ coastline are no longer theoretical.

We aren’t far behind. With the extreme - unpredictable weather (either too much or not enough rain), how can we expect a stable source of food to be produced?

... to get any equipment onto the ground. Soy beans which is a later crop is all but dead as a
crop because of Trump's trade war with China. In Ohio many fields are now just planted in a cover
crop and not in beans, corn, or wheat.

Melt the north pole and stuff happens.

7. and we let 88 universities endorse denial on 260 limbaugh stations

they need to be asked what they would do if the KKK bought those radio stations - basically it did

if a few unis finally decide to reread their mission statements and look for apolitical alternatives to broadcast sports on many more would be shamed into following. the GOP/cons would scream bloody murder. RW radio would lose many if not most of its advertisers and the RW radio monopoly would fall apart. many stations would have to switch formats and the loudest source of global warming denial in the US would disappear

88 global warming denying universtities

9. Excellent Reason to Reinstate the Fairness Doctrine at the FCC

After 30-plus years of partisan vitriol and propaganda being blasted over the airwaves, especially on talk radio, we are seeing the disastrous consequences, we need the Fairness Doctrine to ensure more truth and facts are broadcast.

12. i don'tthink we can wait for a new FD. artificial intelligence will destroy the rw radio monopoly

artificial intelligence allows us to digitize talk radio and list advertisers without much listening, and is described at republiconradio.org

the ad industry just needs to realize how easy it is to record and transcribe those shows and list advertisers on those shows - with very listening needed - the industry is going to have to apply market demand to lies and hate and global warming denial and putting kids in cages

and whenever and whatever the left protests at rw talk radio stations will be front page

or protesting the 88+ universities that use their majority black athletes to attract advertisers to 260 of those KKK radio stations

the cons can ignore protests everywhere else because a few hundred ignorant liars on those radio stations yell over the protestors as long as it takes.

protests directed directly at the root of the problem will freak the cons out. they'll howl "free speech!!", media will notice, and that will send advertisers to the hills. the cons will have to fund it directly and that will end the 'market demand' for lies and hate bullshit

the only unique advantage the fascists have now is talk radio and all americans have to do is stop ignoring it

boycotts of ANY advertiser on ANY rw radio station/show and protests at stations and the 88 universities will send advertisers running and will force the ad industry to ask advertisers if they really support trump and global warming denial. and when universities start looking for apolitical alternatives to broadcast sports on many of those stations will be forced to go to other programming.

this fascism has been blasting from 1500 radio stations for 30 years UNCHALLENGED by the left. as a protected unchalled 20-1 monopoly that dominates political messaging in 40 states with 80- senators it operates outside the free speech spectrum and it won't survive if it's forced to compete.

Shining the light of day on this evil is critical, so reasonable and rational Americans can vote with their wallets. Ultimately, it's all about the money. Monsters like Limbaugh have been laughing all the way to the bank for too many years.

but maybe they were russian trolls working to push limbaugh to some russian billionaire?

just kidding, limbagh has probably been working for the kremlin for at least a decade, whether he knows it or not

it takes work, time, resources - and that's ultimately why republicans want to make everything harder and poorer
